The 411 On Sitting Disease

Chances are you are reading this information from the confines of your office chair. If you are like most computer users you have been sitting there awhile. Today it is our goal to explain that the price of sitting is too much! Let us start with some facts.

Some Interesting Facts:

~Excessive sitting impacts our body’s metabolic system: “Today, our bodies are breaking down from obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, depression and the cascade of health ills and everyday malaise that come from what scientists have named sitting disease.” ~ James Levine, MD, PhD

~Sitting six hours a day increases your risk of death by 40% over someone who sits less than three hours.

~Sedentary lifestyles increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. "For people who sit most of the day, their risk of heart attack is about the same as smoking." ~Martha Grogan, Cardiologist, Mayo Clinic

~Global studies show, on average, we sit 7.7 hours a day, and some results estimate people sit up to 15 hours a day.
~ A study from Ergotron 2013 state "Nearly 70 percent of full-time American workers hate sitting, yet 86 percent are required to do it all day, every day."

How to Combat Sitting Disease:

~The bottom line: You are meant to move!
~ The obvious remedy to sitting disease is to do the opposite, stand!
~Standing is like walking: it increases energy, burns extra calories, tones muscles, improves posture, increases blood flow and ramps us metabolism

~Here are 4 easy ways to incorporate more standing in to your workday!

1. Walk more at work: Park your car farther away from your building; use stairs not elevators; take a long route to the restroom or mail room.
2. While computing, set a timer to remind you to stand up and stretch every half hour; take this time to pick-up and clean your work area.
3.Stand up when you talk on the phone.
4. Don’t send emails if the recipient is near; walk over and talk to him or her.

As an employer or corporation what can I do to help?

~ Create a Stand Up for Your Health policy or initiative
~ Provide at desk solutions for standing and sitting
~ Encourage employees to get up every hour for a couple of minutes

Examples of Workplace Solutions:

1. Provide an Alternative Form of Seating:
The Zenergy Ball Chair provides movement that not only helps you sit comfortably, but may also help you concentrate and support better posture and balance. This movement helps keep your mind open, while keeping your body actively engaged.

The use of a stool and a high desk allows an employee to either stand or sit.
When choosing to sit and added benefit of the stool height is it forces the user to stand up to grab something more than an arms reach away, instead of rolling towards it in the chair. Stools also available without casters.

2. Choose a Desk Alternative:

Sit to Stand monitor arms can be added to any desk and provide employees with both options while providing you with a cost effective change!

Electric tables are all the craze in the "Combat Sitting Disease" world!
The benefit of this solution is that all the contents of your desk are moving with you as you sit or stand rather than just your computer and keyboard!

Do you buy your company’s office supplies?
Do you ever wonder what you can do to save some money?
Well, if you’re a Kershaw’s customer you’re on the way. We already have great everyday prices and free next day shipping, so now it’s time to take your thriftiness to the next level. I am going to give you a few tips on how to cut that bill down and still have everything you need.

1.       Look for the off brand. Business Source and Integra are just a couple of brands that offer a large variety of products that are great quality and low in price. From paper clips, pen and pencils to storage boxes, staplers and sticky notes. Ask your sales rep for the Business Source catalog to see the savings for yourself.

2.       Keep an eye out for bulk packs. Some things that you buy like pens and pencils or even ink and toner are better buys if you get their bulk packs. For instance, instead of buying a 12 pack of Bic Stick pens go for the 60 pen value pack (BIC GSM609BK). The price will be less per unit and you won’t have to order as often.

3.       Ink and toners can account for a large portion of your office supply budget and shaking toners only works for so long. Once again look into the off brands and bulk packs for a better value. Some inks and toners also come in a high capacity cartridge that can hold more than twice the regular one.

4.       Rebates. Have you ever looked on www.kershaws-spokane.com/deals.php to see all of the rebates major brands offer? Brands like HP, 3M, Fellowes and more give you rebates, gift cards and deals just for buying your everyday supplies. Check it out on the link above.

If you have any questions on the info above please give us a call and we will be happy to help you find out how to save. Leave a comment below to let us and others know how this has helped you.

Product Review From the Desk of Tracey

Binder Clips, binder Clips……oh my Binder Clips…..not just for the office anymore!

Binder clips are a beautiful thing!  They are just so dang versatile, you have to love them, they keep giving and giving!  Binders clips are the ultimate in use, reuse and recycle products!  As an added bonus, they come in all different sizes for flexibility.  Just the other day, I used binders clips on the bottom of a shower curtain so it would hang straight down and not blow over and stick to my legs.

I love binder clips soooooo much, if I had to pick between binder clips and post-it notes, I’d pick binder clips!  Think about it, our phone can do everything a post it note can do now, but my phone will never replace a binder clip!

~Here are some of my favorite uses of binder clip~

Around the House:
Can you say cable management?

Dry your sponges, use binder clip as a stand
Make refrigerator clips by gluing magnets to them
Toothpaste squeezer

Hang wall art
Keeps chips fresh, clips bags
Tea bag saver
Clip garbage bags to can so they don’t fall in
Hang your belts by them or wind them up and secure
Use on a hanger to add a belt or scarf or tank top
Organize your belts/scarfs
Organize mail/bills/coupons

In Case of Emergency:
Use as hair clip, in a pinch! No pun intended
Stops snoring!  Just kidding J, but may be worth a shot
Use as a button or a cuff link

Other Great Uses:
Book marker
Safely cover your razor with a binder clip for travel purposes
Clip grocery list to shopping cart
Clip keys to purse to find them easily
Hold a balloon bouquet
Money clip
Clip the picnic table cloth down
Make wine glass charms by using different colored clips or embellishing Make a cell phone stand
Clip Sunglasses to car visor

All of these great ideas and to think you could create one of these ideas for just pennies! Yes, pennies those things that you don't think twice about when you pass them on the sidewalk, maybe you will when you think about all the things you can organize and create with binder clips.
Check out the binder clips on page 453 in our catalog or on our website and choose between Mini, Small, Medium, Large and now available in Extra Large!

We would love to hear the innovative ways you use binder clips!

Dad's Day Facts and June's Tack with Us Giveaway

-Father's Day originated in America. The first Father's Day celebration was held in Spokane, Washington, on June 19th 1910.
-It has been estimated that more than one-third of the cards sold on Father's Day are funny in nature
-According to statistics, the most common gifts Father's Day are the necktie, flowers and greeting cards.
-The world's oldest father was an Indian farmer named Nanu Ram Jogi, who fathered his 21st child at the age of 90, in the year 2007.

Probably my favorite subject surrounding Father's Day are the multiple alternative
names that have been created for Father.

Dad, Daddy, Pops, and Papa are the more commonly associated names with Father but the list of alternative names is endless. Among my favorite are:

1. Sugar Daddy-you don't even have to have children to be this type of Dad!

2. Faja- Austin Powers, Goldmember, infamous way of describing the father

3. Mr. Mom- Because you can't just be a Dad that takes his kids to the park and stays home?!

I personally refer to my Dad as Big D, because too many people answer to Dad and Just D wasn't fitting for my Dad's large personality, so Big D was born!

What do you call your Dad or what is your favorite alternative/slang Dad name?

Responses to this post will be entered to win this month's Tack with Us Giveaway! June's giveaway includes a Dutch Bros Coffee Gift Card, Kershaw's Coffee Mug and some new Pens on the market! All comments must be posted by Monday June 16th at 8:00AM!

This Kershaw's Employee Product Review comes from our Office Manager Carolyn

My product review is on the break room section – yep, the whole section.
All my co-workers will assure you that this is most appropriate for me.
I’m always first in line when the treats come in for someone’s birthday!

You do know how many great snacks there are in there, don’t you?
Sometimes, in the middle of the day, I just open that section and gaze at the pages
wishing this bucket of Twizzlers was sitting on my desk.
Wishing never makes it appear, but if I order it today, I’ll have it tomorrow!
I could have Cheerios, Campbell’s soup, YooHoo Chocolate Drink,
Rice Krispies Treats, Pringles all delivered to my desktop!

Seriously though, there are some things in there that you need and can be added to your regular supply order. You may need a box of Tootsie Pops to cheer up an overworked office, a package of plates, cups, utensils for the lunchroom, a bright table cloth for the office party, a box of Doggie Snax for the pets that visit your office or even work there!  Check it out, page 1332 through 1365 in your Kershaw’s catalog or pull it up on line in our virtual catalog at www.kershaws-spokane.com.

M & M’s – did I mention there are M & M’s?!

HAPPY MAY DAY!

We thought we would kick off the start of the blog with a little bit about the history of Kershaw's!
Oh how the years go by......

Originally founded in 1900 as Western Typewriter by Fred Kershaw, typewriters were stacked on the sidewalks at 810 West Sprague and delivered in wagons. The name was changed to Kershaw’s Office Equipment in 1923 and in 1940 was incorporated as Kershaw’s Inc.  Fred Kershaw’s daughter and son-in-law took over the business in 1952 and sold it 10 years later to Wesley Melior.  The warehouse building where Kershaw’s resides today was purchased in 1962In 1973 Rudy Cozzetto purchased Kershaw’s and built the business to 5 locations. In 1993 Rudy Cozzetto sold Kershaw’s to his daughter, Diane, who worked at Kershaw’s from the age of 16 starting as a janitor.  Diane and her husband, Damien Mangano run Kershaw’s today with the same commitment to service started by Mr. Fred Kershaw in 1900.

So here we are, the current generation of Kershaw’s. Collectively we have well over 100 years of office supply and office furniture experience, and we’ve seen things come and go. We were sad to say goodbye to the 3 martini lunch, not so sad about typewriter ribbons and thermal fax paper. We’ve been around the block, we remember mimeograph fluid, correction tape that came in a little plastic box, carbon paper and spools of Scotch data tape bigger than a dinner plate.  We’re older than Post-it notes, CD’s and whiteboards. If you call us and ask for that black and red bound book with the journal ruled pages, we’re going to know you’re looking for a Boorum & Pease record book.  We’ve jumped at all the new technology and we’re still having fun selling office supplies and furniture.

So follow our blog…keep up with this new generation of the old Kershaw’s.  We hope to give you some good information, interesting facts, fun product videos and some things solely for your entertainment! Every month there will be a random drawing for a random prize of people following our blog – follow us – don’t miss the fun!
